Mid-Century Ranch Kitchen Expansion in Southwest Portland
This Portland kitchen remodel improved flow and accessibility by removing walls to expand the kitchen's footprint in a mid-century ranch home. It was a partial remodel, with the rough-in work completed by Lamont Bros. Design & Construction and the finish work completed by the homeowner. The result is a layout that eliminates traffic bottlenecks and works far better for daily cooking and movement through the home.

Project Goals
The main goal was to fix a layout that forced foot traffic straight through the cooking area and created congestion, especially around the refrigerator. The original floor plan made the kitchen feel tight and worked against the way the household actually moved through the space, so improving flow was the priority.
We removed a wall and reconfigured the layout to open the floor plan. This was a collaborative project that paired professional rough-in construction with homeowner-completed finishing. That split let us handle the structural and behind-the-wall work while the homeowner kept the parts they wanted to do themselves, which gave them both expert modifications and a personal hand in the result.
Unique Features
Key improvements include:
- An expanded kitchen footprint created by removing a wall and reworking the layout.
- A reconfigured plan that eliminates the traffic bottleneck around the refrigerator.
- A center island topped with Tanoak butcher block on the east end for a warm prep and gathering surface.
- A Zline stainless island range hood that vents the new cooktop location and anchors the island.
- Painted shaker base cabinets in a Sherwin-Williams Emerald enamel finish, built for a clean, custom look.
- Strategic appliance placement, including the client-supplied GE gas range with a griddle and the reinstalled existing refrigerator in a better spot.
- Improved access between the kitchen and the adjacent living areas for a smoother overall workflow.
The transformed space now moves people smoothly between rooms while giving the family a more open place to cook. It solves the original layout problems and made room for the homeowner's DIY involvement, which you can hear more about in their testimonial video on this page.
