Beaverton Kitchen Expansion

EXTRA STORAGE & COUNTERTOP SPACE FOR A SMALL KITCHEN

The owners of this Beaverton home approached our team at Lamont Bros. Design & Construction with a vision to transform their kitchen into a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space.

Despite having updated features like new cabinets, countertops, and appliances, the kitchen had some significant shortcomings in usability and storage. They presented our team with the challenge of reimagining their kitchen to meet their growing needs.

The issues in this kitchen stemmed primarily from its layout. The space was cramped, with limited countertop area and inadequate cabint storage, which forced them to use wire baskets as a makeshift pantry. This lack of functionality made everyday kitchen activities often cumbersome and frustrating.

To address these issues, our approach focused on enhancing the space without a complete overhaul of the existing structures. The original kitchen layout featured a bare wall with no cabinetry or countertop space. This stuck out as the part of the kitchen with the most opportunity for improvement.

We added about 10 linear feet of additional cabinetry on the opposite wall. These cabinets were custom made to match the existing cabinets in the kitchen as closely as possible. Rather than attempt to match the existing countertops in the space, the homeowners chose a butcher block countertop to serve as an accent piece.

The additional cabinetry and countertops not only expanded the workable surface area but also enhanced the kitchen’s overall aesthetic. By choosing not to demolish the existing countertops, the homeowners were able to keep costs manageable while achieving the desired upgrade.

The clients also wanted to remove the wall between the kitchen and their living room to open up the space and provide more natural light. When removing the wall completely turned out to be a major expense, we instead turned the wall into a half wall with bar-height seating. Additional butcher block countertop at this bar area further ties the kitchen’s visual design together.

To ensure design cohesiveness and a consistent aesthetic, we also installed new backsplash throughout the entire kitchen. The homeowners chose a blue porcelain subway tile to compliment the white cabinets and wood countertops.

Post-remodel, the kitchen has become a central hub of activity. The homeowners now use it not just as a place for cooking but also for social gatherings thanks to the new open design. The additional counter space and storage solutions have significantly enhanced owner’s comfort and ability to use their kitchen the way they want to.
