What are the responsibilities of a remodel carpenter at Lamont Bros?
To succeed in your position as a carpenter at Lamont Bros. it is important that you understand the responsibilities that come with the role. You can expect challenges, but you can also expect plenty of opportunities to play to your strengths.
Work as part of a remodeling team
For each remodeling project we do, Lamont Bros. assigns a build team to the jobsite. In most cases, this team works the entire project from start to finish. That way, they can focus on one remodel at a time.
As a carpenter, you’ll work under the direction of a remodeling superintendent to complete a remodel. Our superintendents are seasoned veterans with years of experience in remodel carpentry. These professionals are responsible for organizing and overseeing the construction process.
While on the job, your superintendent will provide you with the training and direction you need to complete a remodel. This means that you’ll be learning new skills and strategies. The more you learn, the more complex and challenging work you’ll be trusted with.
Produce high-quality work
On the job, you’ll be expected to complete a range of tasks that require both technical knowledge and strong attention to detail. Our build teams handle a project’s construction from start to finish. As a result, you’ll gain experience in nearly every aspect of the construction process.
A good superintendent will be intentional about which carpenters they assign to a task. For example, if you prove to be an exceptional tile-setter, you’ll likely be assigned a lot of tile work. You may also be assigned work in areas where your skills need growth.
At Lamont Bros., we develop our carpenters into the renaissance men and women of remodeling – skilled and experienced in many different fields, including:
- Concrete & foundation work
- Framing
- Drywall
- Cabinet installation
- Flooring & tile
- Trim & finish carpentry
Four benefits of being a remodel carpenter at Lamont Bros.
As a carpenter for Lamont Bros., you’re a valued member of our team, and we’ll treat you as such. While providing exceptional skilled labor might be how you spend your 9-5, we recognize that you want to live a fulfilling life, both on and off the job.
According to some of our current carpenters, here are the four best things about being a carpenter at Lamont Bros:
Pay & benefits
For an apprentice carpenter just starting out in remodeling, hourly wages start at $18 per hour. Pay increases as a carpenter refines their skills and takes on more responsibility. After a few years of training and experience, they become a journeyman carpenter. Those in this role are trusted with more work responsibilities, and their pay can range from $25 to $32 per hour.
In addition to hourly pay, carpenters also receive additional benefits including:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Company-matched 401k plan (2%)
- Paid time off plus 6 paid holidays
Professional training
One of the most valuable benefits of working on a small remodeling team is the opportunity to learn from seasoned veterans in the field. As a carpenter, you’ll have a superintendent on-site helping you learn and refine your skills in remodel construction.
One of our core values as a company is to “never stop learning.” Apply this principle to your own career, and you’ll be an expert carpenter before you know it. At Lamont Bros., you’ll have the opportunity to work with and learn from several different superintendents with vastly different experiences and skillsets.
In addition to on-site training, our production coordinators offer monthly technical training workshops to all of our build staff. These company-wide training events offer you the chance to learn alongside the experts in the field and grow your skills through collaboration. We’ve most recently done workshops on drywall repair, jobsite protection, and painting techniques.
We encourage our superintendents to emphasize education and skill development in the field. This is something that our carpenters tend to appreciate most about the job. Even when it might take a little more time and a few mistakes to get right, your superintendent will still provide you with the opportunities and instruction to learn and grow.
Career mobility & promotion opportunities
At Lamont Bros., it’s fairly common for someone to start as an apprentice carpenter and work their way up to a superintendent role within a few years. Even those who begin with little experience can rise through the ranks with enough dedication and drive. In fact, several of our current superintendents started out with us as carpenters.
One of the things that we value as a company is putting your career path in your own hands. You shouldn’t have to change companies every few years in order to achieve your professional goals. At Lamont Bros., we have a streamlined procedure to make movement within the company as simple as it can be, and we typically prefer to hire from within for any open positions.
If you decide you want to work your way up to a superintendent or project manager job, that’s a goal we want to help you achieve. Other people get tired of manual labor and eventually decide to change to a desk job. As a design-build firm, we have sales and design positions in the company, too.
Outstanding company culture
Ask anyone who works at Lamont Bros. and they’ll tell you, it isn’t your typical construction company. As a small business built on family values, Lamont Bros. recognizes the importance of a good work-life balance. It’s important to us that you’re able to both provide for your family and also spend time with them.
Our build teams work predictable schedules, regular hours, and almost never work on weekends. In addition, we actively try to avoid creating the high-pressure, high-stress work environment that is common in most construction sites today. Rather, we seek staff who will bring a positive attitude and exceptional work ethic to the jobsite. Grumpy foremen need not apply.
Part of our goal as a company is to craft a collaborative team where everyone benefits from one another. As part of these efforts to promote community and camaraderie among our staff, we put on many company-sponsored events throughout the year. We’ve done several happy hours, barbecue picnics, trap shooting, and even a paintball night.
Four expectations we have for our remodel carpenters at Lamont Bros.
As the company’s “boots on the ground,” our carpenters have an important role to fill. Here are a few expectations to keep in mind so you can do your job to the best of your ability.
Produce top-quality work
When a homeowner hires our team to design and construct a remodel, they’re paying for a project they intend to live in. As a carpenter, your role is to provide our clients with the highest quality of work possible so they can have the best possible remodeling experience.
Many of our projects reach costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Every aspect of every remodel should reflect the price the client pays in its quality of construction. It’s up to you to produce that quality.
This isn’t to say that we don’t expect you to make a few mistakes now and then; everybody does. What we do expect is that you give 100% towards avoiding these mistakes as much as possible and resolving them when they do happen.
Represent the Lamont Bros. brand
Our clients often live at home while we remodel their house. As a result, you’ll likely end up interacting with homeowners and their families quite often.
It is important for you to keep in mind that, when you’re on the job as a carpenter, you’re representing the entire Lamont Bros. team. We expect our field staff to be kind, courteous, and accommodating towards the people we work for.
If you prefer the type of construction site where strong language, lewd humor, and constant verbal confrontations are common, then this is likely not the position for you. Lamont Bros. believes in the value of connecting to people with empathy and respect, and we expect our employees to do the same.
Continuously develop your carpentry skills
No matter how good you are at something, there’s always room for growth. At Lamont Bros., we want our carpenters to be capable of every kind of work involved in remodeling a house.
This doesn’t mean we expect all of our build staff to be experts in everything from day one. What it does mean is that we want you to continue growing and learning new skills to improve your work quality and efficiency.
Those with little experience who approach their job as a carpenter with a growth mindset will quickly outgrow those who have some skill but refuse to learn more. Plus, the better carpenter you become, the more you’ll get paid and promoted, too.
Follow jobsite safety & productivity protocols
While producing high-quality, custom remodels is an important part of what we do, our greatest priority is making sure that you get home safely to your family at the end of the day. It’s important that you take jobsite safety seriously as a carpenter. Not only does it benefit you, but it also helps keep your team and our clients safe, too.
Fortunately for you, your supervisor should take most of the guesswork out of safety planning. Remodeling superintendents are responsible for overseeing general safety and productivity policies on the job. All you need to do is listen and follow their instruction.
We encourage our workers to have fun on the jobsite – tell jokes, laugh, listen to music. Just make sure it’s the kind of fun that won’t end with somebody in the ER.
Do you have the drive to be a Lamont Bros. carpenter?
Are you a hard-working, dedicated laborer who loves the opportunity to work with your hands? If so, we want to hear from you! Experience in construction is certainly preferred, but for a green candidate with the right attitude, we’ll gladly train you in the ways of remodeling. You can read more about both Apprentice Carpenters and Journeyman Carpenters on our careers page, and apply to the one that you think best fits your current level of experience and skill.
