Balancing Vintage Charm and Modern Functionality

This Portland kitchen remodel in the Westmoreland neighborhood focused on preserving the charm of a classic bungalow while modernizing its functionality. The kitchen’s vintage-inspired design embraces the past, while updates make it ready for everyday use.
What Were the Goals of This Primary Bath Remodel?
The homeowners loved their kitchen’s classic aesthetic but needed more storage and natural light. They also wanted to maintain the original footprint to preserve the bungalow’s historic character.
The goal was to create a space that felt open and functional while keeping the beloved vintage style intact.
How Did We Solve These Issues in the New Design?
Our design choices centered on enhancing both the functionality and historic aesthetic of the kitchen without altering its original size.
To keep things light and bright, we chose a monochromatic color palette With white cabinets, countertops, and appliances. This approach helped reflect light and make the space feel larger without altering its footprint.
The custom cabinets were selected to maximize storage while maintaining a vintage feel. By using panel-ready appliances, we allowed standout pieces like the retro range and apron-front sink to shine.
Specific Products and Features Used:
Cabinets by Crystal Keyline: Custom cabinetry designed to enhance storage and fit the kitchen’s vintage aesthetic.
Big Chill 30″ Retro Stove: A brand-new range with a classic look, setting the vintage tone for the entire remodel.
Cambria “Torquay” Quartz Countertop: Durable, light-colored countertops that complement the bright and airy feel of the kitchen.
How Has This Remodel Changed the Client’s Lives?
The remodeled kitchen combines modern functionality with vintage charm. The space feels more open, brighter, and easier to use while maintaining the classic design of the bungalow-style home. The homeowners now have a kitchen that celebrates the past but is fully equipped for the needs of the modern homeowner.
