Revitalizing an Outdated Kitchen for a Growing Family

This 1911 American Craftsman home in Portland's Alberta Arts District needed a kitchen that worked for daily family life without erasing the character that makes the house special. We kept the original footprint intact and concentrated our effort on the things the space was missing, including code compliance, modern appliances, proper ventilation, and storage that actually fits how the family cooks.

Project Goals

This Portland kitchen remodel started with a space that no longer met current building codes and lacked basic features like a dishwasher and a real ventilation system. We preserved the original layout to protect the home's historic feel, then focused on targeted upgrades that make the kitchen more comfortable and more functional for a busy household.

The early work happened behind the walls. We reinforced framing and added insulation to bring the century-old structure up to a more livable standard. From there, the visible improvements took shape, including raised counter heights, new Knight cabinetry, and durable Marmoleum flooring in a Welsh slate tone that suits the age of the house.

Unique Features

Key features include:

  • Custom Knight Cabinetry with MDF Shaker doors in alabaster and maritime finishes, built for everyday storage
  • Pental Quartz countertops in Misterio with a polished finish for a hard-wearing work surface
  • Handmade cement tile backsplash from LiLi Tile in the Sky series, set straight with a clean Schluter edge
  • Walnut open shelving from Sustainable Northwest on hidden brackets, finished in a natural stain
  • New stainless appliances, including a panel-ready Bosch dishwasher, an induction range, and a Samsung Bespoke counter-depth refrigerator
  • A Zline under-cabinet range hood that finally gives the kitchen proper ventilation
  • A Moen Adler pull-down faucet in Mediterranean bronze paired with a Kraus undermount workstation sink

The finished kitchen reads as part of the house rather than an addition to it. The family now has a practical, welcoming space to cook and gather in, and the original 1911 character carries through alongside the modern function they were missing.
