From Pool House to ADU

This ADU conversion in Portland’s Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood was once a pool house. It is now a fully functional accessory dwelling unit equipped with everything needed for independent living.

The homeowners wanted to transform their two-level pool house into an ADU with a kitchenette, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. The space already had an existing half bath, but it needed a shower and cooking area to become a complete living unit. The goal was to create a functional, modern space while preserving as much square footage as possible.

The Design

We focused on making smart use of the available space while maintaining a feeling of openness. The bottom floor features an open living plan, with a kitchenette located across from the large French doors that open up to the backyard. Space-saving features like ductless HVAC units helped optimize square footage while keeping the layout spacious and functional.

To meet the need for a full bath, we demolished the old bathroom and converted an adjoining closet into a new shower. For an added splash of color and personality, the client selected custom tiles from Portland-based tile manufacturer Clayhaus. These vibrant tiles became a centerpiece in the kitchen, while a softer palette of the same tiles created a cohesive look in the bathroom.

The remodeled ADU has completely transformed the space from a pool house into a comfortable, functional living area. The clients now have a fully equipped, stylish ADU perfect for guests or rentals. The ADU is now a versatile space that serves their needs and fits seamlessly into the existing property.
