What is Dekton and why do you care?

If you’re looking for a product that has the same heat resistance as natural stone, but all the perks of engineered quartz like stain resistance, never needs to be sealed, anti-microbial, well, then Dekton has it all.

Hi, I’m Jeanine Acca with Lamont Bros Design and Construction. And I’ve done nearly 1500 kitchens in the past five years. And today we’re going to talk about what Dekton is.

What is Dekton?

Let’s break it down. Dekton is a form of engineered stone like engineered quartz, except it has quartz, porcelain, and glass in it. What it doesn’t have, though, is resin. So no glue making it 100% heat resistant.

Dekton is very unique in the sense that it is U.V. resistant. It is stain resistant, scratch resistant. It never needs to be sealed. And because it is an engineered slab, it comes in a variety of very specific designs. It’s also made in a very slim profile.

Applications and Versatility

You can get it as thin as four millimeters, which is great for applications like constructing cabinets or backsplash on the walls. So you can use it in a lot of different applications for design.

People use it for showers, people use it for large side profiles of buildings. So there’s a lot of really great applications when you have a slimmer profile.

Challenges in Handling

The only downside that I can really come up with on this material is that it takes true expertise to work with it. It’s incredibly strong, but it is a little harder to transport and cut because it can be a little brittle. So like every material out there, it can chip, but once it’s installed, it’s generally really, really strong.

What does Dekton cost?

Dekton cost is going to vary by group, just like engineered quartz. An average kitchen is around 45 to 70 square feet of countertop, and the range for Dekton is probably going to be like engineered quartz between around $6K and $14K. That would include installation and the under-mounting of a sink.

Price Variability

You’re probably wondering why such a big range? Well, it actually comes down to the process to manufacture the material and that specific design. You might be looking at a very high gloss finish with a lot of veining in it.

And they have to make sure that, A, there’s veining in every piece of countertop and, B, that it’s all going in the right direction. So they may have to actually cut up multiple slabs to fabricate this design where this one not so much. So that’s where you get the huge gap in price.

Consistent Quality Across the Line

I would also say that the quality is identical throughout the entire line as long as it’s all manufactured by the same manufacturer. And since Dekton is Dekton and only made by Cosentino, you don’t really have to worry about the quality.

So, if you’re on a budget, choose a design that is less expensive because it’ll still be beautiful. If you are a green person, this is a 100% carbon neutral product, so you may want to even check out how it’s made.
