AGING-IN-PLACE BATHROOM SOLUTIONS FOR THIS FOREVER HOME
The original bathrooms in this Lake Grove condominium presented several challenges for the owner. Knowing that she wanted to stay in this place for the rest of her life, she decided to invest in remodeling the bathrooms to better fit her needs as she ages.
To help her accomplish this goal, the owner came to our team at Lamont Bros. Design & Construction with the goal of making her two bathrooms more accessible for aging in place. The main goal of the project was to remove tripping hazards and solve some layout challenges while also updating the style and finishes to better match the homeowner’s taste.
The original design of the primary bathroom was too small for the homeowner’s needs. Additionally, the door swung into the user path of the toilet and sink, making the space difficult to get in and out of.
In the guest bathroom, there was a large cabinet bench surrounding the shower and tub, making it difficult and sometimes even dangerous to use the shower due to the tripping hazard.
In addition to the layout and usability challenges, the finishes in both bathrooms were visually outdated. The owner decided she wanted something more contemporary that matched her personal preference.
To solve the primary bathroom’s spatial issues, our team expanded the bathroom by removing the 45-degree wall where the original door was situated. In its place, we installed a 90-degree corner with a pocket door, enlarging the bathroom and removing the door’s swing space.
The homeowner decided to renovate both showers to ensure that both bathrooms were exactly as she envisioned. For the primary bathroom, she selected a blue glass mosaic tile from MSI and a low-profile shower pan to reduce tripping hazards.
In the guest bathroom, we completely removed the old bench shelving and tub-shower combo, opting for a simple walk-in tile shower instead. Instead of a shower pan, this bathroom features a custom hex tile shower floor.
Our team also installed grab bars and a wall-mounted toilet in the guest bathroom to match the one in the primary suite. These space-saving toilets are great for small bathrooms and also make cleaning much easier.
In addition to the new showers, we refitted both bathrooms with new vanity cabinets and vessel sinks, adding a unique stylistic flair. The homeowner opted for new waterproof vinyl composite flooring from Evoke to ensure the floor both looks great and will stand up to any water-related challenges life might throw at it.
Now that this project is complete, both showers are easily accessible and safe for use, and the bathrooms more uniquely serve the owner’s sense of style. With improves safety features and updated visual style, the owner can rest assured that both her bathrooms will continue to serve her needs for years to come.
