When these homeowners came to Lamont Bros., their primary goal was to remodel their Milwaukie home to improve wheelchair accessibility while updating the design to reflect their style. One of the homeowners uses a wheelchair daily, so it was crucial that the home be functional, easy to navigate, and comfortable. The project focused on three main areas: the kitchen, bathroom, and entertainment center.

Kitchen Remodel Solutions

The original kitchen layout was traditional, making it difficult for a wheelchair to navigate. The owners decided their primary focus was to remodel their kitchen to be more wheelchair friendly. Our approach focused on widening pathways and improving accessibility while integrating design elements that aligned with the homeowners’ updated aesthetic.

We moved the island further out to create wider walkways, allowing for easy wheelchair movement. A floating sink was installed, providing space for the wheelchair to slide under, enabling the homeowner to get closer for tasks like washing dishes. Additionally, we installed a table-height counter along the exterior edge of the island to provide a comfortable gathering space for guests at a height suitable for both wheelchair and able-bodied users.

The new kitchen space includes the following features:

  • Bedrosians Cloe Tile Backplash: Featuring a glossy, handcrafted finish, this tile product adds subtle texture and depth to the space. This timeless subway tile complements the kitchen’s contemporary aesthetic.

Bathroom Remodel Solutions

The bathroom of this Milwaukie home also required significant modifications to improve accessibility, as the original design presented several challenges.

These issues included a raised shower pan and a narrow water closet entry.

We removed the large soaking tub, which the homeowners rarely used, and replaced it with a curbless, custom tile shower for easier wheelchair access. Our team also expanded the water closet and installed two pocket doors at a 90-degree angle, creating a wide, accessible entryway. Grab bars and a small sink were also added for additional support and convenience.

To enhance comfort and functionality, we also incorporated the following features and products:

  • Laticrete “STRATA_HEAT” System: This convenient feature provides underfloor heating, adding warmth and comfort during colder months.
  • Emser “Heska” Hexagonal Tile: The tile’s geometric pattern adds visual interest, while its matte finish provides slip resistance, essential for safety and ADA complilance.
  • Kohler Hand Shower: Offering both versatility and accessibility, the shower’s adjustable height and handheld option make it ideal for both seated and standing use.

How Has This Remodel Changed the Client’s Experience?

By focusing on accessibility, we transformed this Milwaukie home into a space that serves the homeowners’ needs without sacrificing style. The result is a functional, welcoming home custom-designed for the homeowners’ daily needs and design preferences.
